AI Literacy

AI (artificial intelligence) describes systems that can process large amounts of information and make predictions, provide recommendations, or generate new content based on that information. AI systems are tools designed to imitate the way humans think and learn. Just like our brains, AI systems look for patterns in data and generate what to do next based on the information available to them. Like the internet or social media, AI tools are reshaping our world, impacting how we learn, create, and make decisions.

AI literacy is the ability to understand, interact with, and evaluate the accuracy of AI tools and the content that they produce. A key component of AI literacy is understanding both the potential and the limitations of AI tools, so that we can make informed decisions based on the information they provide. Building AI literacy is key to using these digital tools productively and responsibly.

Whether you’re looking to teach AI literacy skills or boost your own AI literacy, these resources can help. Learn more about how to use the resources on this website.

Why Teach AI Literacy Skills?

Like any new technology, it’s hard to know where — or how — to get started using AI tools. By teaching AI literacy skills, you can help people take the first step in exploring AI tools and understanding their potential and their pitfalls.

Unlike a search engine that connects you to content published online, AI tools create new content based on the data it was trained on. As with all digital content, it’s essential to use information literacy and critical thinking skills to evaluate the information you get from AI. That might look like checking facts or looking up the source material that AI used to create the new content. For these reasons, everyone who wants or needs to use AI tools can benefit from building their AI literacy skills.
